Luminous Bacteria Associated with Shrimp Mortality

چکیده

Luminous disease caused by luminous bacterial infection is currently a significant problem among the Asian countries where marine shrimp is the main aquaculture product. Luminous bacteria isolated from the shrimp farm environment include Vibrio fischeri, V. harveyi, V. cholerae biotype albensis, and Photobacterium leiognathi. Of these, V. harveyi is claimed to be the causative agent associated with shrimp mortality. In hatcheries, its pathogenicity is correlated with the developmental stage of the shrimp larvae. However, successful prophylactic measures have been established. In grow-out ponds, luminous disease frequently causes mortality with 2-3 month old stock of Penaeus monodon and a bacteroiphage of V. harveyi has been implicated in mortality of such shrimp exhibiting tea-brown gill syndrome (TBGS). Chemotherapeutics are more or less effective for controlling the disease but are not effective for curing it. Recent in vitro studies have demonstrated growth inhibition of this bacteria using biological control and the information gained paves the way for further investigations.

Disease Control in Shrimp Aquaculture with Probiotic Bacteria

Shrimp aquaculture production in much of the world is depressed by disease, particularly caused by luminous Vibrio and/or viruses. Antibiotics, which have been used in large quantities, are in many cases ineffective, or result in increases in virulence of pathogens and, furthermore, are cause for concern in promoting transfer of antibiotic resistance to human pathogens. Probiotic technology pro...

Vibrio harveyi and the 'green water culture' of Penaeus monodon

The “greenwater culture” of the tiger shrimp, Penaeus monodon, is an innovative culture technique for the grow-out rearing of shrimps. This culture method involves the use of rearing water of tilapia for the rearing of tiger shrimp in grow-out ponds and or the polyculture of shrimp with tilapia. This culture technique was reported to prevent disease outbreaks attributed to luminescent Vibrio. T...

Isolation, identification and characterization of new luminous bacteria from Chah Bahar Port, southern marine habitat of Iran

Coastal region of Chah Bahar port, Sea of Oman, was screened for the presence of bioluminescence bacteria for the first time. Water samples were taken from surface and subsurface layers and immediately spread on nutrient seawater complete (SWC) agar. Luminous colonies were observed after an overnight incubation at 25°C. Among twenty luminous isolates, four of them were selected for preliminary ...
